Don't let one negative person occupy space in your mind!
LISTEN TO THE PODCAST NOW:Ok let’s real talk for a few minutes here!
But I’ve never worked in another industry where a majority of people really appreciate what you do and then there is always one or two people who just feel the need to criticize!
And here’s my theory as to why.
Music is for everyone and that’s what makes it so that we can actually have careers. Most people LOVE music, a lot of people live LIVE music and a lot of people grow up learning music and an instrument, singing and so it’s a huge part of a lot of people’s lives. Some people aspire to be musicians, singers, famous, write songs, and some don’t. And some of us actually set out and work our buts off to make this happen. And I know I”m preaching to choir when I say that it takes thousands and thousands of hours of practicing, learning, skill building to be really good at what we do. And then on top of that it takes thousands of hours of learning how to be an entertainer. And there are a lot of people who love and appreciate that.I’m sure if you’ve played live recently people have thanked you and appreciated your work and talent and skill. But there is a small section who think “they can do that” and maybe some can.The reality is most cannot, I can watch people high level sport and think yeah you know I used to play basketball I’m pretty good and then in reality I get out there and NO I”m not that good because I haven’t played in 30 years and I wasn’t that good to begin with.It can be easy for people to think “I can do that” or to tell you something quite hurtful because they don’t have any concept of what it takes and how much you’ve done.My Mum always told me to remember that there is always someone better than you in the room and there is always a lot of people who want to be you in the room, or want to be doing what you are doing. So my attitude is to always go out there give them the best show I have in me and I learned very quickly into playing live to focus on the large % of people who love and appreciate what you do. Don’t let that 1 person in the room if they appear who criticizes or gives you bad vibes, or has too much to drink bother you one bit.My friend who also played live acoustic gigs for many years and I would talk all the time about the “1 person in the room”. And the fact that many of us get caught up in that 1 person when in fact 100 others love what you do.A lot of the time Music is accompanied by alcohol, and alcohol makes people braver than they need to be. So that is a contributing factor at times as well.I want to empower you and remind you today that if there is that 1 person! No matter if it’s someone in the crowd, someone on the web, or someone in your own family – there is no need to focus on that 1 person that may be getting you down right now.Remember that you are taking away from the amazing positive energy that so many other people are giving you and trying to give you by being too caught up and affected by the 1 person who doesn’t appreciate what you’ve done.Don’t do yourself a disservice and those who really are supporting you, it’s not worth it.There is feedback that is worthy and you should listen to in order to better yourself and then there is feedback that is just downright negative and attempts to bring you down. That 1 person does not and should not have the effect on you that they might be having right now.I give you permission to let any negative energy from that 1 person go and leave it behind.
